Snoring can be defined as an unpleasant disturbing noise caused by constriction of the upper respiratory tract during sleep, such as nose, soft palate, small tongue and tongue root. The most important in the treatment of snoring is to accept that snoring is a disease. Snoring is not a shame, it is a disease. Snoring is a treatable disease.
It could be a harbinger of a serious health problem. Snoring indicates that the air passage in the airways is not sufficiently clear, and a very severe snoring indicates that air passage through a narrow space is forced.
Accepting snoring as a disease is the first step towards treatment. Generally, the person who snores does not bother with his / her own snoring and does not apply to the doctor alone. Since snoring is a bad sleep companion, snoring patients are usually brought to us by their spouses, friends and even neighbors, who have to go on business trips and share the same room. The most important point about snoring is to determine when snoring causes health problems. If the person snores during sleep and breathing stops and this breathless time is more than 10 seconds, then we should talk about a disease that can have serious consequences called sleep apnea.
This disease is obstructive and generally the most common sleep apnea. It is estimated that snoring occurs in 10% to 30% of adults. In most of these people, snoring is not serious enough to cause serious health problems called simple snoring.
It is predicted that approximately five out of 100 people have severe snoring, as well as breathing stops during sleep, and so-called obstructive sleep-apnea syndrome.
At least 45% of normal adult people snore from time to time. 25% constantly snores. Snoring problem is most common in fat men and increases with age with each passing day.
USA. more than 300 companies have developed devices against snoring. Some models are modifications of an older model, such as sticking a tennis ball behind the pajamas (snoring increases more when lying on your back). Chin and neck straps, lanyards and devices placed in the mouth provided no benefit. Electronic devices were found to work with the sound of snoring and wake the patient. All of these were thought to be the patient’s exercises to sleep from snoring. Unfortunately, snoring is a problem that is not under the control of the person, and all these devices are intended only to keep the patient awake.
What causes snoring?
The sound in the form of noise that occurs when the airway behind the mouth and nose is narrowed is called snoring. The back of the tongue and the area where the soft palate and the small tongue are joined to the nasal region are a self-narrowing region. When they overlap, they vibrate with breathing and snoring occurs. One who has snoring has at least one of the following problems.
The tension in the tongue and throat muscles decreased. When the loose muscles lie on your back, you cannot prevent the tongue from slipping behind the throat. This phenomenon occurs when a person who has lost alcohol or medication has lost muscle control in their sleep. In some people, snoring may also occur due to relaxation in the deep phase of sleep.
Excessively large tissues in the throat. Large tonsils and nasal flesh are the most common cause of snoring in children. It is shown as the cause of thick neck tissue in obese people. Cysts and tumors can rarely snore in this way.
The soft palate and the small tongue are too drooping and long, narrowing the airway towards the throat. It snores like a valve because it hangs in the airway.
A person with a nasal obstruction creates excessive vacuum in the nasal passage to remove air. This vacuum draws collapsable tissues in the throat towards the airway. Thus, when the nose is open, the person who does not snore begins to see snoring. This explains why some people snore only during allergic periods or when there is flu, sinusitis. Nasal deformations are known as causes of nasal congestion. Deviation is defined as the lateral overflow of the middle chamber of the nose. It is the most common intra-nose deformations.
Is snoring a serious problem?
Socially yes! This is a serious threat to family life. The person who snores is a mockery. Other members of the family are responsible for sleepless nights. The snoring person becomes unwanted roommate on vacation and business trips. Medically, yes! The self-harm is greater. There are nights without rest. High blood pressure is more common in people who snore than snoring. The most severe form of snoring is “obstructive snoring.” In this disease known as ap sleep apnea şiddetli, severe snoring is stopped with a period of breathlessness. Breathing stopped completely. Breath-free seizures of more than 10 seconds are more severe than 7 in an hour, which is a serious threat to life. In this case, your doctor will advise you to have an examination in a sleep center. In patients with apnea (breathlessness), obstructions occur 30-300 times per hour. In this way, the blood oxygen level in sleep decreases excessively. During this period of oxygen drop, the heart has to pump more blood. After a while, the heart rhythm deteriorates, high blood pressure and heart growth settles over the years. People with obstructive snoring can enter the deep sleep phase in a very small portion of their sleep. Deep phase is the only way for real rest. The rest of the night will be sleepy, tired and inefficient. Napping while driving or at work will be seen.
Can snoring be treated?
Many types of snoring can be treated. The following recommendations should be followed for adult snoring.
To gain a good muscle tone, a sporty lifestyle should be chosen.
People who snore should not take sleep medicines, sedatives and allergy medicines called antihistamines before sleeping.
He should avoid drinking alcohol 4 hours before sleep.
He should avoid heavy food 3 hours before sleep.
Avoid excessive fatigue.
Sleeping on your back instead of lying on the side should be preferred. As an old suggestion, sewing a tennis ball on the back of your pajamas is still a useful method. This prevents sleep on the back.
Turn the entire bed approximately 10 cm to one side with the head of the bed higher. For this purpose, placing a brick under one side of your bed will be suitable for your purpose.
Give people time to go to sleep before you snore at home.
People who snore in any position are called “heavy snores.. They need more help than the above suggestions.
If snoring becomes harmful to the person and his or her family, you should consult your specialist. This is especially important if you are unable to breathe during sleep (loud snoring is interrupted by a period of breathlessness). The nose, mouth, throat and neck of the snoring patient should be examined in detail. Sleep laboratory studies are valuable to determine the size of snoring and the health of the snoring person.
Treatment is undoubtedly based on diagnosis. It is as simple as the treatment of allergy or infection, or in the form that requires surgery of tonsil nasal flesh or nose disorders. Snoring – Successful results are obtained from snoring surgeries, which allow breathing to stabilize the moving tissues and expand the airway. This is called uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP). It doesn’t feel much different for a patient than tonsil surgery. Laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP) using Laser is another surgery that can be performed with local anesthesia. In cases where surgery is very risky or undesirable by the patient, he / she can sleep by wearing a compressed air mask (CPAP). Every child with chronic snoring should be examined in detail by the ENT specialist. In cases where tonsil and nasal surgery is necessary, surgical intervention will provide important benefits to the health and development of children.
Remember: Snoring is a dangerous interruption of breathing. Snoring is not funny, not desperate at all.
