Nasal Congestion

The nose is a very important organ for human health. For a healthy respiratory function and a healthy body, breathing through the nose is essential. The nose is not just an organ in and out of the air. The nose moisturizes the air during breathing, warms it, makes our sound unique to us, ventilates our ears, makes us smell.

Nasal congestion is one of the most common complaints due to the fact that the nose structure of the people of Turkey is bony and most of the people have allergic diseases. If this problem is not solved in long-term nasal congestion patients, it causes serious health problems.

Briefly, nasal congestion seriously deteriorates the quality of life of the patient and may cause further health problems if not intervened in time.
In this article, I tried to briefly explain the causes of nasal congestion, what complaints it causes and treatment options.

Causes of nasal congestion:
* Deviation of the nasal bone
* The growth of lower nose meat (turbinate)
* Nasal roof contraction (valve contraction)
* Nasal flesh growth
* Common intranasal polyps

These causes one by one or together cause nasal congestion.

Patient with nasal obstruction:
* Continuous mouth breathing is forced to do; Frequent recurrent throat infections occur and invasive pharyngitis develops.
* Snoring and sleep disorders develop.
* Heavier lung and heart problems.
* Dry mouth develops in the morning.
* Sexual dysfunction happens.
* Tends to develop psychological problems. These patients complain that they are particularly irritable.
* Sound quality deteriorates and nasal speech develops.
* Children may have problems wetting diapers at night.

As can be seen, the nasal congestion seriously deteriorates the quality of life.

Nasal congestion operations:
* Nasal bone correction (deviation surgery)
* Partial removal of lower nasal flesh (or radiofrequency application)
* Opening of the nasal roof (valve surgery)
* Aesthetic nose surgery (treatment of some nasal obstructions is possible by changing the outside of the nose)
* Taking nasal meat (usually in children)
* Medical and surgical treatment of intranasal polyps

Patients with nasal congestion need surgery if they do not benefit from drug treatments.
Nasal obstruction is a serious health problem. It must be treated.

One of the most common causes of nasal obstruction is the obstruction of the airway as a result of skidding or skewing of the intranasal bone. This structure, also called nasal pole and called septum in medical language, is the first condition for healthy breathing.

Septum Deviation is the name of nasal bone shift or curvature in medicine.
The treatment of septal deviation is surgery. With the surgery called septoplasty, the curved parts of the septum are removed, corrected, and the septum is brought to the orate line to ensure that both nasal passages are open.
Surgery can be performed with general and local anesthesia, depending on the choice of the patient and the doctor. The operation lasts between 30 minutes and 45 minutes. Newly developed sponge or silicone tampons are put into the patient’s nose. Thanks to these newly developed tampons, patients are most painless and easy to withdraw the buffer is very easy.

Two days after the operation, buffers are taken from the nose of the patient. And the patient can continue his daily activities. Please consult your doctor before and after surgery.

Nasal flesh growth is a very important and common cause of nasal obstructions. There are three pieces in the nose, lower middle and upper nose. While nasal congestion develops in the growth of lower nasal meats, frequent recurrent attacks of sinusitis and susceptibility to chronic sinusitis develop in the growth of middle nasal meats. Therefore, surgical treatment should be applied when nasal flesh growth is not achieved despite the necessary drug treatments.

Causes of nasal flesh growth:
* Allergic nasal flesh growth
* Nasal flesh growth due to slip in the nasal bone
* Structural disorders of nasal flesh

Surgery to be applied to the flesh of the nose; destructive, and not intended for the entire flesh of the nasal flesh (preserving the so-called mucosa that surrounds the flesh of the nose) and partial. This is because the nasal flesh and the sheath surrounding the nasal flesh have an important role in the function of the nose.

Surgical intervention is necessary in cases where there is no improvement despite drug treatments. The operations are performed in full-fledged hospitals using the latest techniques by endoscopic method. Nasal flesh surgery can be performed together with other nose surgeries. In addition, our center uses radiofrequency, which is the latest technology, to reduce nasal flesh. With this method, the nasal flesh can be reduced at the same time under surgery conditions or other nasal surgery (especially in conjunction with aesthetic nasal surgery). After this application, no serious pain was detected in the patients and painkillers were sufficient.

If there is not enough support on the side walls of the nose, the patient cannot breathe through the nose due to collapse of the wings of the nose during breathing. This may be congenital and developmental, but may also occur after a previous surgery. These patients typically begin to breathe very easily when both index fingers are placed at the junction of the nose and the cheek, and a slight opening motion is made towards the ears. We call it the Cottle maneuver and use it to diagnose valve stenosis. Nasal valve stenosis is also treated by surgery and the nasal side walls must be reconstructed by placing the cartilages taken through the nose at suitable angles. This surgery can be performed concurrently with septum deviation, nasal flesh reduction and aesthetic nasal surgery. When done alone, the band is worn on the nose for 3-5 days. In the nose, small buffers are put for 1-2 days depending on the situation.

The growth of the nasal flesh is the growth of tissues called adenoid that are located behind the nose and which prevent the infections by producing the defense cells of the body and block the back of the nose and create a nasal congestion. Although this condition is frequently seen in children, it can also be observed in adult patients who are neglected in childhood and not operated on time. Snoring, nasal congestion, nasal talk and frequent recurrent sinusitis are seen in these patients. Treatment of this tissue under general anesthesia is scraped from the location. The operation lasts for about 20-30 minutes, and the patient can return to daily activities 1 day after the operation.

This disease is usually observed with allergy asthma and aspirin sensitivity, the formation of gel-filled meats similar to grapes in the nose for an unknown reason. They cause sinusitis as well as nasal congestion. The treatment of this condition is endoscopic surgery in very large and widespread cases followed by systemic (oral) steroid and topical (spray) steroid treatment. Spray treatment may be sufficient only in uncommon cases. It should be known that it may recur in patients with surgery. Patients who are scheduled to undergo surgery are said to undergo medical treatment for a period of time before surgery increases the chances of surgery

If you have a nasal congestion problem, consult a ENT specialist.
